A work colleague of mine husband has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. As can be expected they are overwhelmed the information and need any assistance to navigate them through the information maze.

The questions sometimes cloud our minds as to why the Lord would appear to tease us. He blesses us with children and whilst we are in the midst of enjoying them He seems to snatch them away. I know it is good to say, "it is better to be with the Lord" or "all things work for good for those that love the Lord and are the called". David does give us a glimmer of hope on how to deal with the tragedy, and where the Lord remains silent, we take comfort from David's response to the lost of his son.
21Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
22And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?
23But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

O.K so the scientific community has once again made a ground-breaking declaration, the types of food you eat regularly can impair your health. The most recent study results by the World Cancer Reserch group are not really startling. Processed food, high caloric food, sugary foods are agents of poor health. The problem is that with our highly advanced and industrialized society our foods come to us processed to facilitate the conveniences we love. This is really ironic, we embrace technology and industry to make food faster and cheaper, yet that it turns out is detrimental to our health. So now we go full circle, back to the soil, without added processing. So the craze is now organic or free range. So the agrarian society had it right, eat your food closer to the ground. Not even water is pure anymore, just about everything we eat is tainted by some "process or artificially stimulated" agent. Chicken has too much hormones, salmon is farm raised, fish has too much mercury, fruits have waxy coatings, and even water is now processed and sold in bottles with vitamins added. Do not get me wrong; prevention is worth more than its weight in gold. So here is my approach, eat just enough to stay healthy, reduce high concentration of processed foods (especially restaurant, fast food and pre-prepared meals). Fruits, vegetables, oatmeal is always welcome. And every now and then, eat some baked item. And exercise, doing something regularly that challenges the body's system. It is so easy to become unhealthy.

Sue continues to encourage and inspire those who have had encounters with cancer. Even though many of us view cancer as a tragedy Sue's story demonstrates how one can turn what appears to be a tragedy to be a tool to promote healthy living and good works. This reminds me of Titus 2:14 of being zealous for good works. As a member of the Grace Cencer Care team, Sue we salute you for your courage, care and love.

This has been a challenge for people whose first immediate response on hearing someone is diagnosed with cancer is " How can I help?". Usually the person diagnosed with cancer is at a complete loss on how to respond, and usually somehting like this comes out. "Thanks I have no needs right now, or I will let you know, or thanks for your concerns". But what they are saying is " I am trying to make sense of this radical change in my life and do not know what to do". One way could abetter prepare ourselves to serve is to consider getting some education on how to respond meaningfully and intelligently to people with cancer. So maybe this is something we can consider for the ministry.

Anita, this is such a wonderful artilce on excercise. The problem is that so many people see exercise as a chore, something extra that has to be done. I have been told that taking the path of lease resistance is that which makes a river crooked, the same can be said of exercise. Taking the path of least resistance, provides a crooked and decrepit body. Excercise, as you point out must become a part of our daily routine. As we age, our bodies depreciate and deteriorate so much faster, added to the fact that the cost of healthcare increases faster that we can keep up. So, we must encourage others to invest in their bodies, if they really love themselves and I dare say their loved ones who will have to care for them when their bodies are incapicitated from the lack of regular and routine excercise.
